Tips and Tricks: Making the Most of AirPods Pro
New gestures: AirPods Pro has new gestures. Now, instead of patting the earbuds, you need to press the bottom of them. One press pauses or starts the music, two presses forward, three presses backward, and a longer press switches between Noise Cancel and Ambient mode.
Noise Cancellation: Apple’s new wireless headphones feature Noise Canceling for the first time, meaning you can isolate virtually all external sound so you can only hear the music. Press the handset’s side for a few seconds to turn it on.
You can also activate the function by going to Control Center, pressing the volume bar with the AirPods Pro connected, then tapping “Noise Cancellation”.
Ambient Mode: As the AirPods Pro end up having their own isolation just by the new design, Apple has implemented an “Ambient mode”, which allows external sound to pass through the earphones more easily.
This mode is ideal for walking on the street, hearing the name of the subway station, or even knowing the status of your flight at the airport. To activate it, just press one side of the headphones for a few seconds or do the same thing as noise canceling through Control Center.
Change AirPods Pro gestures: If you don’t want to leave both sides of the earphone with the one long press to toggle between noise canceling/ambient mode, go to “Settings”, “Bluetooth” and tap the “i” of the AirPods Pro with them in the ear.
You can switch one side to “Siri” instead of “Noise Control” or let one side switch between canceling and this off mode or ambient or off mode.
Tip Fit Test: Want to know if the AirPods Pro’s noise cancellation is working in your ears? Under “Settings”, “Bluetooth” and on the “i” of the AirPods Pro, go to “Test Fit Tips”. This option tests whether the headphones are properly isolating the music from the environment. Just keep both earphones in your ear and if something is wrong, the iPhone will warn you that you may need to change one of the ends to a smaller or larger one.
Name your AirPods: By default, your AirPods will call “AirPods from [Apple ID name]”. Under “Settings”, “Bluetooth” and the “i” of your AirPods, you can change their name. Use creativity.
Switch Microphone: By default, AirPods automatically detect which microphone to use. If you usually always use a headset on one side or want to save battery (since it is the right that usually uses up more battery, you can choose which side you want it to hear you in the headset settings.
Play/Pause: this tip is the most basic, but also the best: if someone wants to talk to you and you have your headphones on, just take one out of your ear and the music or video will automatically pause. When you put it back in your ear, the headphones play automatically.
Share Audio: Starting with iOS 13, you can connect one more AirPods or Powerbeats Pro so someone else has a full music/video experience with you. From the Control Center, tap the AirPlay button and then “Share Audio”. Open the other AirPods and then tap connect. If you open the other AirPods near an iPhone that is already playing music, it will also suggest sharing audio.
Read Notifications: Also in iOS 13, it is possible to ask Siri to read your messages as soon as they arrive. The function is only available in the Messages app and you can reply back. In “Settings”, and “Siri & Search”, tap on “Read Messages” and activate the function.
So Siri: with the AirPods Pro, just like the AirPods 2, you just have to call your personal assistant to place an order.
Switch from iPhone to Apple TV: On Apple TV, you need to go to “Settings”, “Remote Controls and Devices”, and “Bluetooth” and then select your AirPods.
Switch from an iPhone to an iPad or a Mac: With iOS 14, you may seamlessly switch between Beats Solo Pro devices. If you are watching a video on an iPad and you touch iPhone, the headset automatically switches to mobile.
